New Looks. J. Crew "Stretches Into Yoga"

Jcrew_yoga Jcrew_mat
According to WWD, J. Crew is primed to launch a new yoga-themed collection. Now, the collection is available at the online store and at the J. Crew store in Manhattan's Rockefeller Center. It will also be in the fall catalogues, and yoga shops within other J. Crew stores are being considered.  Marketed as "perfect in any pose," the new line is definitely exciting. If it holds up to J. Crew's usual quality standards, it could be a great addition to the brand. Hopefully it will not become the sort of after-thought of, say, Gap Body, though it seems to have that potential. Time will tell!

Celebrity Sue. Uma Thurman Sues Lancôme

Uma_thurman

Fresh off the heels of her creepy stalker case, it looks like actress Uma Thurman may be headed back to court. WWD, is reporting Thurman filed a $15 million lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan today (Friday) against Lancôme for allegedly continuing to use her image in advertising even though her contract had expired.

According to Thurman’s lawyer, Bert Fields, her contract with Lancôme ended in 2004, but the brand has continued to use her image to sell products all around the world during the past four years. She is seeking $15 million from the French company, owned by L’Oréal.

But Lancome is fighting back – the company filed a suit of its own earlier this week in the State Supreme Court in Manhattan, saying it did not violate the contract and does not owe Thurman money.

The List Is In & Fashion Was Not Forgotten. Time Magazine's 2008 Most Influential People.

Time Magazine has unveiled its fifth annual list of the world's most influential people, and who else made it (ranked #203, but still!!) our dear Carine Roitfeld, editor of French Vogue. The best part about this may be that my other favorite person in the fashion world, Hedi Slimane, wrote the blurb on her, and beautifully so. Slimane, the former designer for Christian Dior Homme, passionately describes in detail what makes Roitfeld such an eccentric person, perhaps a "why she is the way she is" minus the explanation. A few months ago I wrote an article on the 'differences' between Roitfeld and American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, after becoming inspired and intrigued by New York Magazine's claim that the two women were butting heads at Paris fashion week. After reading Slimane's take on his dear friend, I am once again reminded why Carine Roitfeld is such a definitive human being. She may be number 203 on Time Magazine's list, but she's definitely further up on mine.

Other fashionista's that made the list include Stella McCartney (#185), Tyra Banks (#5) and Heidi Klum (#4). The fact that Heidi beat out Tyra makes me almost as happy as the fact that two of my favorite musicians/bands, Jay- Z and Radiohead, were both included. Finally, out of the many political figures mentioned, I have to give it to Vladimir Putin (#55) because not only is he one of the more interesting figures in the world right now, especially after hand picking his successor and thus causing massive speculation of his political practices all over again, Madeleine Albright wrote the article on him. That alone makes it a worth while read.

Whoa! There is some disturbing news from the bling front. According to WWD, a group of 15 current and former female employees has filed a class action lawsuit against the 1,300-store Sterling Jewelers Inc., which operates under such names as Jared, Kay Jewelers and Belden Jewelers, charging the retailer with engaging in a pattern of widespread sex discrimination by denying promotions and equal pay to women. Jump back sister!

The law firm representing the women, Cohen, Milstein, Hausfeld & Toll P.L.L.C., announced the lawsuit just today with four former Sterling employees.

“The purpose of this suit ultimately is to change the practices of this company,” said Joseph M. Sellers, co-counsel with the law firm in the case, which was filed late Tuesday in U.S. District Court in New York. “It is the industry leader and other companies look to companies like this in the way they model their conduct.

”When an industry leader is engaged in widespread discrimination, the countenances provide cover for whole industry practices that may be similar in nature,” Sellers continued.

More to come Thursday!
