Paris Fashion Week. Fairy Tales and Mad Love from Guy Laroche. Second City Style Fashion Blog

Guy Laroche's story began with what looked like an homage to the goth fantasy of the Goblin King, but ended in a working-girl turned Cinderella fairy tale with his wearable wonders. While he clearly reveled in fantastic visions of the winged-sleeves, longhaired little capes, black lace and oversized gold sequins, he didn't overlook the necessity of sexy... not revealing but rather flirtacious in a sophisticated kind of way.  Dresses that gave us a glimpse of one shoulder, a plunging neckline, waistlines wrapped up and tied to bond the dress securely to it's wearer, and even what appeared to be a leather or even rubber? dress elevated the notion of sex appeal.

The color story was just as eclectic as the fabric. Shiny metallics, muted smokey plums and even fushia and bright red (a spin on the infamous Little Red Riding Hood?) went down the runway, offering forms of punctuation that would evoke immediate, various kinds of emotional responses.

Fashion Week 2007. Let the Fur Fly: Has PETA Lost Their Power? Second City Style Fashion Blog

Team Vogue is on the Prowl...

Perhaps a very appropriate story given the blizzard-like conditions on the East coast and in the Midwest, WWD's Rosemary Feitelberg asks if the animal rights organization PETA has lost some of their panache. Over the years and the activist group has protested designer's use of animal fur, slamming celebs, designers, editor and animal skin-wearing passers-by with paint and verbal reminders of the origins of their ensemble-toppers.

However, Feitelberg notes that NY Fashion Week '07 was filled with both fur-wearing attendees and fall designs. Whether the fur on attendees was real or just a great faux replica can't be said for sure. However, many designers took the risk and it went by almost completely unnoticed and sans a streak of paint.

Fashion Week 2007. Coats You'll Be Coveting. Second City Style Fashion Blog.

Every year I check out the fall fashion with a special eye towards the coats, because coats and jackets are one of my favorite pieces to collect (naturally, this means I own way too many), and they're relatively practical (at least that's how I justify myself).  Some of my favorite coats this year were the swing and a-line styles that showed up on many runways this past week.

These coats flare out from the shoulders down, and there were tons of variations on this basic theme - cropped at the waist, with bracelet length sleeves, big shawl collars, or extending to below to the knee.  The last silhouette is particularly great for wearing over full skirts and dresses, as the coat will fit over the skirt nicely, and the shorter ones are best for pairing with narrow bottoms (skinny pants, pencil skirts, and the like).  Also, coats that have 3/4 length or shorter sleeves will be fantastic with all the long gloves you'll be wearing next fall.

73242747_8_273245275_8_2

These two very different coats by Richard Chai would both be great for next fall - the white one paired with jeans for everyday wear, and the royal blue with dressier looks (plus, that color would definitely pick up dull winter skin).

73263248_8_2  73262678_8_2

Again, two opposing looks - black, cropped, and leather versus white, long, and cashmere.  This season, Y&Kei have coats for both sides of your personality.

Charles_nolan_coat_1 Michon_shur_coat_1

Here's two vibrant options - the houndstooth jacket is by Charles Nolan and the hot pink coat is Michon Shur.  Neither one of these is meant for wallflowers, so wear them to bright gray winter days.

Ck_coat_1  Myself_coat_1

Some more subtle offerings from Calvin Klein (left) and Myself by Kai Kuhne (right).  These would be chic everyday coats, and the neutral colors would make it very easy to mix it up with different accessories.

Bm_coat_1  Thakoon_coat_1

The jacket on the left is by Badgley Mischka, and it would be fabulous paired with narrow pants and boots.  The gray tweed Thakoon number would be equally fabulous, but the overall look would be totally different.

Jill_stuart_coat_1 Erin_fetherston_coat_1

More cobalt blue, this time from Jill Stuart - it's definitely going to be a hot color come fall.  The silver and white brocade is by Erin Fetherston, and with it's metallic print and shawl collar it's right on trend in more ways than one.

Lela_rose_coat_1  Tracy_reese_coat_1

The coat on the left is by Lela Rose and is really more of a cape, but the overall shape still fits the bill.  The black jacket by Tracy Reese on the right is yet another excellent basic piece.  Whatever style you prefer, there'll be more than enough swing coats to choose from next fall.

Fashion Week Fall 2007. The Many Sightings of Anna Wintour. Second City Style Fashion Blog

Make no mistake about it...Second City Style idolizes Vogue's Editor-in-Chief (since 1988), Anna Wintour (mind you, we don't necessarily want to work for her). There was a lot of buzz around fashion week about Cathy Horyn's "Citizen Anna" article...(favorable as it should be). Luckily, I'm not crazed enough to follow her around. Thankfully our photo service is!
