Crimes of Fashion. Stealing From Marc Jacobs Doesn't Pay

Marc_jacobs_2

OK, maybe crime does pay, but only in the short-run. I read about this yesterday, but totally forgot about it.

A manager at a Marc Jacobs store in the West Village was arrested Monday for stealing $62,000 from the boutique, and admits he had "been doing it for a while." Kyle Avila, 25, worked at the Marc by Marc Accessories store at 385 Bleecker St. for the past 11/2 years. He was released on bail Wednesday and has been charged with one count of grand larceny in the second degree.

Marcjacobs_logo Fellow store manager Mike Okerson noticed the missing cash while doing a routine review of receipts from May 1 to 6 indicated that the deposits were short $67,977.60
Okerson called the corporate offices and informed higher-ups about the theft. He then gave Avila until Sunday to return the cash. Guess what? Avila didn't show (surprise) so his colleague called the cops.

Probers are investigating how Avila spent the money, the DA's office said. Our guess is on a lot of clothes...probably not Marc Jacobs either.

"Kyle left [the store] three days ago in a hurry," said a former co-worker, who did not want to be identified.

Now he knows.

Events in Chicago. Leona Helmsley Estate Auction.

Leona_helmsley_2 On May 18, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will host a Vintage Couture and Accessories auction featuring the clothing and accessories of billionaire real estate magnate Leona Helmsley. The extensive collection of fashions and accessories from the Helmsley estate includes her finest suits, handmade gowns, furs and accessories and is highlighted by the suit she was photographed wearing to her first day at prison – a classic late 1980s Chanel suit in pink wool and denim.

Well known as the infamous “queen of mean,” Leona Helmsley’s determination and marked perfectionism assisted her and her husband, New York real estate investor and developer Harry Helmsley, in amassing a fortune worth billions. Personifying the quintessential 1980s decadent lifestyles of the rich and famous, Helmsley made national news when her questionable business practices led to her indictment at the end of the decade.Leona_chanel

In addition to the property from the estate of the real estate mogul (think custom-made chiffon gowns, her signature suits and a collection of over 200 Ferragamo shoes in a rainbow of shades...), the auction will also offer a look at other collections of vintage pieces, and a wide array of iconic Hermes Kelly and Birkin handbags.

The preview begins May 15th, and you can see the online catalogue here. Weird... and exciting!

Strange Bedfellows. Barneys and Target Team Up.

1_36614_fs Target_logo
According to WWD, Target will introduce its new Rogan for Target Go International line at the Barneys flagship store in New York this Friday until Sunday, and then at the Los Angeles Barneys May 16 to 18. The somewhat odd pairing occurs because Barneys carries designer Rogan Gregory's primary line, and will debut his low-priced pieces that run from $15 to $45. Target, meanwhile, also has to rebuild its apparel business after losing its personification of fashion, Isaac Mizrahi, who's not renewing his contract at the end of the year. Not everyone is sold that the pairing will be mutually beneficial; Erin Armendinger, managing director of the Jay Baker Retailing Initiative of the Wharton School at UPenn, said her reaction when she heard of the arrangement was "sort of perplexed. I think it's really odd. I'm not sure what everybody's getting from this. I don't know why Barneys needs Target. I'm not sure a Barneys customer is going to be a Target customer. [...]You have to be careful with these partnerships and whose casting what on whom." We're not so skeptical. The line's Barneys debut will certainly draw New Yorkers to the store who might not regularly shop there, and more exposure is always good... right?

Shoes News. Glamour Stiletto Run 2007. Second City Style Fashion Blog

"She's going the distance. She's going for speed." - Cake

Considering I have a hard enough time walking in 4-inch heels, I will leave this to the professionals. Had you been in Berlin, Germany this past Saturday you could have competed in the Glamour 100m (.06 miles) Stiletto Run. Competitors in stiletto high-heels raced against each another August 18, 2007 on Kurfuerstendamm avenue in central Berlin. The Stiletto Run is organized by publisher Conde Nast, who invited 100 female readers of the German edition of Glamour magazine to participate. The Stilettos had to be at least 7cm high (2.8 inches) and not wider than 1,5cm (.6 inches).

Ouch, that's gotta hurt!

Fashion Shows. Fashion Week Has Gone to the Dogs (Really). Second City Style Fashion Blog

Petfashion_2
I love my dog probably more than the next person, but my need to dress him in clothing stops at a 'manly sweater' and only when it's freezing. Let's be honest here, he's a dog and I'd rather spend the money on my wardrobe. Such is not the case with some people who chose to spoil their pets like bratty children. I digress.

Pampered_pooch_1_2 According to and article in yesterday's NYPost, Pet Fashion Week starts this Saturday. Now stop laughing and read on...spending on American pets is expected to top $40 billion this year. The Dog Whisperer must be shaking his head. What the heck are people with crazy amounts of disposable income buying you ask? How about a $3,000 bottle of pooch perfume, or an $8,000 Swarovski crystal encrusted doggie vest or a $200,000 diamond collar? Next time I question myself about dropping to much on a pair of designer shoes, I will think of idiocy and feel just fine.
