The rain fell relentlessly during Chicago's first Fashion Focus evening, but you would never tell by the excitement and energy that resonated within the Millenium Park tent. Macy's, along with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, hosted the first runway show of Fashion Focus 2009, Macy's Presents the Designers of Chicago. The Spring 2010 preview show consisted of an amalgam of Chicago talent, ranging from established designers to the six participants of the Macy's Fashion Incubator program.
The collections of the 12 featured labels were as diverse and individualistic as the city they design for, each bringing a unique flavor drawn from various backgrounds and experiences. Some designers showcased their values with sustainable materials in their lines, others catered to specific demographics like plus sizes and petites, and each made a statement stylistically—whether sophisticated, feminine, or fun—that was each their own. And though the ceiling dripped sporadically and a few hems hems dipped in the puddles pooling on the ground, the beats were rocking beats, the collections were inspiring, and the enthusiasm of the crowd—made up of everyone from buyers to politicians to overall fashion fans—seemed to remind everyone how glad they were that they came.
