Legally Yours. Cartier Sues Donna Karan
DKNY Women's Ion-Plated Tank Watch
Watch out! No seriously...watch out! Don't mess with Cartier's "Tank" watch. According to The New York Post, luxury jeweler Cartier sued designer Donna Karan Tuesday, charging the designer with ripping off its celebrated "Tank" watch name.
Lawyers for the French jeweler - which created the classic timepiece in 1917 - are non too happy with Karan for marketing watches with the word "Tank," which Cartier has copyrighted.
Cartier complains that consumers might think the Karan watches affiliated with Cartier products, which can retail for more than $10,000. Karan's DKNY version, called the 'Women's Ion-Plated Tank Watch' costs $115. Would you confuse the two?
Cartier wants Karan to stop selling the disputed watches, which Cartier fears will dilute the value of its trademarked timepieces, according to the lawsuit.
