What does it mean to be a girl? a woman? in 2008? Luella Bartley seems to have some interesting answers in her spring 2008 collection. Complete with sweet floral prints a la sugar-and-spice but gives them a spin with high hemlines and jewel-toned stripes. Ruffles are overstated but still beautiful in hues of blue, pink and in a very structured and geometric yellow. Dresses that recall the swinging 60s are paired with 80's Doc-Marten-inspired boots and there is even a reference to the 40s with her thigh-high shorts and cute tan suits and jackets. Pants appear but are always tapered at the leg and glasses reinforce the sexy-smart schoolgirl who will kick your ass at recess.
Appropriately, the mask makes several appearances, leading viewers to believe that we're supposed to recall the element of costume in any of these ensembles. And if that's not enough we have the repetition of the batman insignia atop a jacker and pants ensemble. So who is this new women liberated by post-punk sexuality and the ability to pick her pleasure-- whoever she wants to be.-- Joanne Molina, Senior Editor
