IN: Polka dots in muted tones and large proportions. The emphasis will be on the bold, graphic nature of the geometric prints.
Lela Rose polka-dot halter dress, $1950 from Neiman's
OUT: Store this dress. It might seem right because of the emphasis on the oversized graphic but the colors are anything but cohesive with the fall palette of soft, muted tones.
Mini Dress $198 from Scoop
IN: Look for mustard, hunter green, navy and black in your knit prints. The modernist Chevron lines are perfect — large but not overwhelming to the eye.
Zigzag stripe tank dress by M Missoni $575 from Intermix
OUT: Go directly to jail. Do not pass Go or collect $200. This is a cute look for summer and this past spring but it's time to store some of the 80's striped garb, and well, lets start with anything that screams Police!
Vince striped mini-dress, $120 from Saks
IN: Muted abstract prints on fluid materials. Forget the starched cotton of some summer favorites. Think silk and maybe a really slinky jersey. The curves should be flowing with the fabric.
Marc Jacobs Cowl-Neck Dress $1300 from Bergdorfs
OUT: I love the fluid silk-jersey fabric but the print is too dainty for fall and the palette is too pastel.
Jovovich Hawk Cookie Dress $427 at Shopbop
Sure there is some crossover from summer into fall but buyer beware! A print is never just a print. Here are some fun summer pieces that shouldn't be making the cut into your fall wardrobe. —Joanne Molina, Senior Editor
